Between work, traveling for work, death in the family, getting ready for our national meet in May, organizing the shop (again), piddling with the shovelheads, there just ain't enough time in the day. Rev. Meeting at David Justice's house in Bat Cave, NC for an all day ride in the Smokey Mountains. Dave is a native of that area and knows all the best roads. We'll end up at The Shed in Apple Valley for a cookout, some 'shine and other delicasies! I'm taking my camera this time for some photos. Probably ride the old '42, but we shall see, I may take out some insurance on the '72 and ride it.

We usually have 20 - 30 bikes on this annual ride, primarily knucks and shovels. The components for use in this build have an interesting history. To make a long story short, I traded for a mis-matched '47 EL from Les White and used the '41 frame, inline front forks, rear fender, transmission and a few other parts to build the Cruiser Green '41 EL seen elsewhere on this blog. I used the internals out of the '47 in the repaired '41 EL cases.

I ended up with about half the parts to build a '47. RL Jones had a frame, I bought a set of NOS '48 front forks, used the '47 wide brace front fender and started piecing it all back together. This motor has an extra set of heads that the Reverend Doctor Gee built, I bought a set of rods and flywheels off Ebay, the cylinders were a set I had sleeved (they say a knuck will not stand sleeved cylinders but we shall see), Ben Edwards, Ben's V-Twins in Charlotte balanced and built the motor. I found the NOS right hand shift gas tank, gate, shift lever and the special front exhaust rocker nut on Ebay from Dave Bustamente in Indiana. Rory Clark and Bob Aton met with Jerry Wieland in Davenport last year and took measurements of the bellcrank, mounted on the rear motor mount. Rory had those parts fabbed for me. Dave Bustamonte came to the rescue again and loaned me the shift linkage rod from the lever to the bellcrank for me to copy - I owe him a six pack at a minimum. You can see in one of the photos the heavily modified left tank seen prior to completion in an earlier post.

I mounted the and shimmed the engine. I also modified a stock oil tank making it 1-inch shorter to allow the trans to be raised for more ground clearance with the fine tig welding at the top by Wayne Beckham from Lancaster, SC, an old friend from my days at Duracell. Larry did a bit of touch up and Bob Aton massaged the oil tank sheetmetal.

Though I had the trans mounted, it did not meet Larry's standards so he re-did the stands. The photos show some of the fender modifications required - cutting the tips off and grafting them onto the bobbed fenders was truly a lot of work. Rear wheel is an 18" with a 4.00 Firestone, front is a '32 VL 19" ( man, lacing that up to a star hub is a pain) also with a 4.00 Firestone, both with beadblasted stainless spokes. Larry fabricated the exhaust, keeping the length of both at 36".

Next trick is making, yes making, a copy of a set of Flanders handlebars, using just the center and bends and fabbing the rest! I could have bought a set from Tom Faber, a super set for sure, but that would have been too easy. The top tree will be modified since the front forks are set up to "split the difference" between an inline and an offset spring fork. Damn....

Anyway, it is so great a ride it deserves a better owner than me, one who will take it out, show it around and generally have a blast! A good hot rod, like a good bike, is built to be driven.

It is such a shame that the original builder, the late Mikie Hawkes from Littleton, Colorado, died so unexpectedly at such a relatively young age. This is a mid-engine conversion to Chevrolet V-8 power. This particular car had the (no longer available) Chris Wills big car Saginaw 4-speed kit. It was build by the late Mike Hawkes of Littleton, Colorado and is quite well put together. Engine is a built 400 small block. This convversion was designed by Ted Trevoe and was highlighted in many of the mid-60's auto publications including Hot Rod Magazine. Mikie improved upon the design by modifiying the crossmember to allow the seats to sit back an additional 4 inches with the use of a low-mount alternator. Mike also modified the front wheelwells to accomodate the tires, installed S-10 front disc brakes, the sunroof, added the Yenko rear wheel flares and spoiler, installed Autometer gauges in the Corsa dash and did a jam-up job in all the details. The hole under the front bumper is for the air intake into the front mounted radiator, there are two 1-1/2" copper pipes that allow water to flow to the engine and there is an electric fan to ensure cooling. To say it is a killer is an understatement! It is a sure-nuff hot rod and was a participant on the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2001 and 2002 prior to Mikie's passing. The acceleration iss mind-blowing and with the mid-engine, it handles like on rails, which is what Ted Trevor had in mind when he designed this conversion! I was raised on Corvairs and had a '65 Corsa with a 4-carb motor in high school and a Crown conversion was always my dream car, even with all the 'Vettes I have owned in the past. I will truly miss it but I no longer have time to play around with it, what with everything else I am involved in, most of which involves working here at the house or with my involvement with the AMCA chapters locally in preparation for our AMCA National meet next year. I have to deliver it to the CORSA (Corvair Society of America) National Meet in Jacksonville on July 16th which means I will miss the AMCA meet in Wauseon, Ohio but you know what they say - Money Talks, Bullshit Walks. I bought a set of V-Twin brackets just to get this piece but they are way thick and not bent correctly. Plus the mount hole seems to be like the '82 or so with the big bolt hole so now you know why I went this route. Why, you might ask, did I just not bondo the thing up? The correct answer is that to do so would be a failure to make a relatively simple task quite complex. The darn thing fits quite well with the correct curve and when tacked into place and welded in should be virtually undetectable to those pesky magnets. And I hate bondo, though I know the tank will need a skim (though I really prefer 2%) coat of filler prior to paint.

Still shooting for Davenport, even if I have to paint the bike with Devoe.

Parts is parts is parts - for the tank!

The first photo is of the salvaged lower tank mount. I tried to carefully cut off the metalwork without getting into the tank itself but cut it kinda close, don't you think! I'll get that MIG welded when the other pieces are installed.

Actually, this was a decent tank, a bit of rust inside, nothing that a radiator shop can't get rid of. The tank had a thick coat of gold metalflake, all caked up and cracked - most of it I removed with a putty knife. The paint you see is on a bit of lead patchwork, which is the only place anywhere with any kind of filler.

Donor tank for '47

Here is the donor shovelhead tank that Adam gave me. The last piece of the right-hand shift '47 knuck is coming up with a left hand tank. The easiest thing would be to take a foot shift tank from a panhead and weld on mounts for the speedball emblems. But no, that is too easy by far! Let's take a '48 tank with the shift gate and lever pivot mounts and modify that! Yeah, that's the ticket! So, while pondering the task, I talked with Adam in the club and he had a beat-to-hail left hand tank that he donated to the cause. In return, I gave him the complete bracket for the lever pivot mount so he could use it to resurrect a '61 - '62 tank shift tank. That's what it all used to be about, helping a club brother out - no money changes hands, just parts with each getting what they need. To say that I have neglected this blog is the understatement of the decade! Many events have transpired - survived the outsourcing attempt at work but my boss, who hired me in 1990, retired at the end of the year and I have a new one! The company I've worked for as plant manager since 1990 is being "brought into the fold", so there are many changes forthcoming and have been since the beginning of the year. Anyway, I shall survive even in these troubling times.

In any case, that is not what this blog is all about, it is about the more personal aspects of life, at least from my perspective.

Worthy of note is that the antique motorcycle club of which I am President, the Catawba Valley Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, received the go-ahead to put on a National AMCA meet, with the Blue Ridge and Dixie Chapters, in 2010! It will be held at Denton FarmPark in Denton, NC. Dates are May 14, 15, 16 2010. The location is superb (and that is understated).

I am continuing to work on the '47 and photographs will soon follow.

Stay tuned (those who still tune in, that is).

Rumors of my death are greatly exagerated!

August the 1 already??? The adapter is in place on the left holding the sprocket. It is a bit hard to see but the split ring that is holding it all together is also shown, on the inside of the hub flange. Both made out of stainless. We may have missed the mark on the width of the adapter since we are about half the width of the sprocket out of line with the tranny. Actually, that is pretty good at this point since the spread of the castings on the repro frame was over 2" too wide so I had to do some "adjustments" to get it to this point.

Next is welding in the replacement brake stay that I got from Lonnie Isam at Competition Distributors. At that time we'll put in a wheel & tire ass'y and see how it all goes together. I've replaced the wheel lugs with Invader wheel lugs that have a hex head which I hope will make it a bit easier to bolt up, but it seems that this will have to go in as a complete assembly - I'll make a jack so it will be a one-man job. Also I hope that the ten Grade 8 1/4 x 20 bolts will handle the torque of a slightly modified knuckle (I can smoke-test this when complete. And we still have to figure out the width of the spacers that will mount inside the adapter since there is an internal sealed bearing for extra support on what is the weak-side of the star hub.

Stay tuned.

Neat garage or what?

Some guys have a neat garage and some guys have the neatest things in their garage. There were several of these motorcycles produced and they were tested on the road to evaluate their roadworthiness. Since they were deemed to be as expensive to produce as the knuckleheads and since there were durability issues (including the weak 3-speed transmission), these never went into production. The motors were to be scrapped but when the employees took them to the scrap yard they kept some of the components instead. Somewhere along the line the missing components were fabricated and Carman Brown in Canada used these rescued and recast parts to build this fine example. Apparently H-D sued to regain the motor but lost in court. Here are three photos showing the great restoration of this warbird that we all used to climb in and over. A beautiful restoration that put this bird back into flying condition! This is really a sleek plane as the photos show.

'41 Knucklehead, home at last

Another superb restoration by the Rev. Frame repairs by Marty at USA Racing in N.J., Cruiser Green paint beautifully done by fellow club member Bob Aton. This bike took a tremendous amount of work to put in this condition. They were riding them all over the Davenport fairgrounds in 2007, after putting the '36 together (Yes!) on site. Both absolutely stunning and super runners! Their shop website is www.carlscyclesupply.com. Both are two of the nicest people you'll ever meet, always glad to talk and answer any questions. I am putting the brake on the right side and will still have the sprocket on the left (using a '73 up sprocket). I've drilled out all the rivets & broke loose the spot welds of the internal reinforcement and the brake stay tab from the backing plate. Using a stock plate and axle to orient everything. Will have to get this all back together and will probably go see the Reverend Dr. Gee for his input. Steve from Race Frame Engineering in Australia told me of a source for a reproduction brake stay for the frame since I want to leave the stock one in place in case this is a catastrophe. I'll get one on order next week. Also trying to figure out how to make an adapter to attach to the star side of the star hub to mount the sprocket. I've got it figured out in my head. Of course my head is sometimes like the Little Shop Of Horrors so we'll see where this goes.

Eclipse 02/20/2008

Taken from the front porch.

Oldest running Harley-Davidson - 1905

This the world's oldest running Harley-Davidson, owned by a super guy, Bruce Lindsay from Ohio, who is also the archivist for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, Inc. Bruce rode this bike, all 27 cubic inches worth, from his home near Cleveland to the original factory in Milwaukee for the 100th Anniversary celebration and received exactly zero, none, nada recognition from the Motor Company. It would seem they milk the nostalgia for all its worth but have no interest in the work and effort of others. Bruce is also a big Knucklehead fan, having ridden through Europe on one.

EA-3B - More photos

That ain't me but it could have very well been, sitting at my console on the way to or coming from patrol. Great view from that seat! Second photo is two A-3's at the Rock of Gibraltar. I saw that many times since it was not that far from Rota on the Atlantic coast. Third photo is of a VQ-2 EA-3B at Naples. The plane captain has his head and torso out the escape hatch - this was opened for landings and gave him a good 360-degree field of vision as the plane taxis. FYI, if we had to ditch, that hatch is the only exit. I would be sitting in the rear cabin and looking out the side window, seen here directly in front of the engine. Fourth photo is an A-3 coming in to land on a carrier, of course, and the fifth photo is a great shot of air-to-air refueling.

I had a total of 1,591 flight hours and received my Naval Aircrewman Wings while flying with VQ-2 on EC-121M's, EP-3E's and EA-3B's. These birds and the EKA-3's (tankers) were the biggest birds that could launch from and land on the carriers. The first photo show a VQ2 bird hooked and getting final check prior to the cat launch. The second photo shows a VQ2 bird (notice the VQ2 Sandeman insignia on the tail) getting ready for launch. Notice the blast shield raised from the carrier deck to divert any debris during the launch. Third photo is of an EA-3B getting in position for air-to-air refueling, always a fun proposition. Fourth photo is the same A-3 in photo one coming in for a landing, looks like she'll catch the second wire, good landing! Fifth shot is of the rear cabin where the guys worked on patrol. I sat in the seat in front on take-offs and landings. The plane captain and I switched once we were airborne and he worked that console while I worked the radio console in the cockpit directly behind the pilot - good view . Turbo-prop powered, much more reliable than the WV's. Were faster and flew higher so we had to cut back on the drinking as we went on station much sooner - oh, well, may have helped with the liver. These are tough birds, one of which had the air collision with the Chinese fighter a few years back and landed safely though not without loosing the nose (portion in black below the cockpit).

Willie Victor EC-121M Super Constellation

When I was in the Navy as a CT a bird like this was the first one I flew on. The domes, top and bottom, are radar domes. Engines on this unit were radials and did they sound sweet!! We always taxied with the side doors off in case of emergency and the engines sounded like a squadron of Harleys! But when an inboard engine blew, and they did with regularity, they would blow oil all down the side and into the bottom dome. What a mess, and us peons had to clean 'er up. Super bird, unpressurized cabin, it could take bad weather with not a whole lot of scares. Crew of 31, I believe, and we even had hot meals from the galley! We'd stay up drinking all night and then sleep until we went on station! These planes, similarly configured, were also used as hurricane hunters. These Super Connies were designed by Howard Hughes and without the domes and luxuriously configured were even the Air Force Ones of the day!

Bell Aircraft P63 King Cobra from Springs Park, S.C.

This is one of three King Cobras still able to fly and is now located at the Air Museum in Palm Springs, California. It, along with an AC-87 (cargo version of the B-24 which was made into a diner at the park) was given to Col. Leroy Springs, WWI ace and owner of the Springs Cotton Mills, in 1946. The doors of this warbird were removed and a ladder was attached to one of the wings. I and many other kids spent many a day inside this bird dreaming that we were famous fighter pilots. After Springs Park closed in the mid-80's it was sold and eventually ended in the hands of Bob Pond who financed a million-dollar restoration by Steve Hinton's Fighter Rebuilders. It was then donated to the Palm Springs Air Museum. Sitting on the wing is pilot Jim Dale and in the cockpit is Jim Kirk from Lancaster, SC, who identified the plane by the dents in the original wings where the ladder sat. So, if you see this bird, named Pretty Polly, tell her the folks back home said "Hey there!". I wanted her to be able to ride an antique on our rides instead of her Evo Sportster. I wanted electric start but a rigid frame. Frame pulled out of the trash and modified by Granny by cutting everything off aft of the seat post and adding the back half of a Harley reproduction rigid frame. The back half modified to accept a Softail rear brake. I ground off all the excess trash in the neck.....with a Dremel tool....slow is my middle name. Front fork is a '69 style drum brake, all rebuilt. Motor and trans are done. Work proceeds at a glacial pace. My friends are prodding me along but their extra cash would be a better incentive.

Our Babies - Precious Cargo

Cocoa Puff and Tattoo patiently awaiting for the chauffeurs to take them on an outing. He's had this Corvette for I believe at least 20 years. This is a factory air, power window & brakes & steering car but it was not a numbers matching car so he's not been bashful to make it his own. It is being reworked.....again. Motor is a 4-bolt '66 396, heavily modified as you can see, factory side exhaust. Motor runs sweet!! AC updated and actually cools in summer trafic! Trans is a 700R4 overdrive. Complete Vette Brakes suspension. The last photo shows the NASCAR-style PS added to get rid of the original slave cylinder-style factory PS. Car is soon headed out to get new paint and a new leather interior. Then I reckon he'll take me for a ride and scare the bejesus out of me.....again.

A cold January meeting for the Catawba Valley Antique Motorcycle Club

The Catawba Valley Chapter had their 6th annual January "get organized for the new year" meeting at our house in Mitford this year. Wanda made some great beef chili and sausage chili for the guys. Long Distance Rider was Bryan Reece rode his AMCA Winners Circle '57 Sporster down from well north of Charlotte. Temp in the 50's. Kudos to all for attending, especially those who rode. The eleven remaining charter members of the original 13 received 5-year patches.
